Food Protection: Classroom

The Food Protection Course trains individuals in food protection practices to ensure the safety of the food served in New York City's food establishments. The NYC Health code requires that supervisors of food service establishments and non-retail food service establishments be certified in food protection. Completion of this course and passing of the final exam satisfies that requirement.

The Food Protection Course is available in person in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. This course is also available for free online.

Cost: $114

Frequency and Duration : The course is 15 hours long and is given over five days and each daily session is 3 hours long. It will usually start on Monday and end on Friday.

When Monday is a City holiday, classes begin on Tuesday, end on Friday, and each daily session will be three hours and forty-five minutes long.

Languages available:

  • English - classes are held twice a day: 9am to noon and 1pm to 4pm.

  • Chinese and Spanish - classes are offered twice a month from 5pm to 8pm.

  • Korean - one evening class is held each month.

Participants who complete the Food Protection Course and pass the final examination are issued certificates. Final exams are given on the last day of the class. Students passing the exam will be given their certificate that day.

How to Register:

  • You can register and pay for this course online. To register online you must pay by American Express, Discover, Visa or Master Card, or electronic check if you have both your account number and bank routing number. A 2.49% convenience fee will be added to the cost of the class when paying by credit card. Register and pay for this class.

  • You may also register for the class by going in person to the Citywide Licensing Center. Certified Check, Money Order, American Express, Discover, Visa or Master Card.

Food Protection: Free Online Training

If you are a supervisor in a restaurant or non-retail food service establishment, you must receive a City certification in food protection practices.

To receive a certification, you must first complete the free Online Food Protection Course, or pay to attend the course in person.

The online course is offered in English, Spanish and Chinese. The course is self-paced and consists of 15 lessons. You must complete each lesson and pass a quiz before moving on to the next lesson.

Final Exams

While the online course is free, you must pay $24.60 (including fees) in order to take the final exam to receive your certification.

You will be prompted to schedule an exam appointment once you successfully complete the course. You must pay with a credit card.

ASFTP provides online food handler training. Food handler training is optional in most areas of New York and this course provides excellent food worker training to teach the important principles of food safety to food handlers. Your local regulatory agency may have additional requirements. Please contact your local regulatory agency for more information. 

A food handler is defined by law as a person who works in a food facility and performs any duties that involve the preparation, storage or service of food in a food facility. This program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) against the ASTM standard.

This training is a general food handler course. 

This course takes approximately one hour to complete and, upon successful completion, provides a printable food handler certificate. This certificate is good for up to five years. 

 

This course is not to prepare workers to take the Food Protection Manager  certification exam. The course to study for the certification exam is the Food Protection Manager Certification Course. (info on left column)

Exam is given at the end of the Food Handler Protection course and a proctor is not required.
